Etymology tree
Mandarin 躺 (tǎng)
Mandarin 平 (píng)
Mandarin 躺平 (tǎngpíng)bor.
English tang ping
Borrowed from Mandarin 躺平 (tǎngpíng, “to lie flat; (figurative, neologism) to be unwilling to struggle, to quiet quit”, verb), from 躺 (tǎng, “to lie face up, recline”) + 平 (píng, “flat”). The Chinese term originated in Internet posts by users from China, especially on the microblogging site Weibo, around February 2020, and was popularized by a since-deleted April 2021 post in Mandarin with a title translated as “Lying Flat is Justice” by Luo Huazhong (under the username “Kind-hearted Traveller”) on the Internet forum Baidu Tieba, in which he discussed his reasons for living a low-key, minimalist lifestyle.
