  1. The larger population from which a subpopulation is drawn.
    — For each number of subtypes from N = 1 (all cells are indistinct and members of one superpopulation) to N = the number of cells recorded (all cells are unique and no meaningful crossover exists among them) there is some finite range of threshold linkage distances for which N subtypes appear from the data.
