In December 2017, a modified version of the song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the band The Proclaimers was posted to Tumblr, on which one user commented "This is the only mp3 I've ever downloaded off this site that had metadata of any kind and it's Mmmm Slurms [sic]."
In the following years, various "Slurms"-related media was posted to YouTube, until late 2025, when "Slurmcore: Weezer – Buddy Holly" was uploaded, sparking the internet meme known as slurmcore.
