  1. A chess game starting from the initial position which results in a particular position appearing on the board, associated with retrograde analysis problems.
    — In this and the next problem, don't be concerned that the moves make absolutely no sense in the normal way. These are similar to what problemists call "shortest proof games" (SPGs). The object of an SPG is not to checkmate the opponent but to reach a given configuration in the fewest moves from the opening position. In this problem, a "proof game" (PG), the object is somewhat different, since the final position is not given but is for you to discover.
