The circular and longitudinal fibres of the œsophagus, which, by their peristaltic motion, determine the descent of the food, an effect which gravity itself would not suffice to produce, especially in the case of other animals than man : thanks to this mechanical combination, œsophagic degutition is possible, despite the horizontal situation of the œsophagus.
