— Some authors (e.g. Stein, 2022; Rowson, 2021) have observed that the polycrisis is, actually, a symptom of an underlying ur-crisis, a sense of being lost which is experienced collectively and individually. Such a state of mind is derived from a long-term prevalence of narratives of progress, innovation and success – and, with them, imperialism, colonialism in all its forms – that not only drove Earth systems to the current compounding crises, but failed to provide any “map” that could light up paths to exit such crises.
