Borrowed from Romanian hiporeic, from Ancient Greek ὑπό (hupó, “below”) + Ancient Greek ῥέος (rhéos, “flow”) + Romanian -ic. Coined by Romanian hydrobiologist Traian Orghidan in 1955.
