    — “Tutsi” and “Hutu” are contested categories that scholars now tend to describe as “ethnosocial.” Most agree that the two groups—who coexist in Rwanda, Burundi, and Eastern Congo—were not simply invented by 19th and 20th-century European scholars, although colonial writers certainly exaggerated their differences.
