— It's an extremely complex role that Bergman has written for [Elliott] Gould, that of a man who is haunted by the fact that he is his family's only male survivor (his father died in a concentration camp), and who is apparently his sister's protector and lover. But little of this complexity comes through and I, for one, never believed that his archeologist could find a cuff‐link in a messy bureau drawer, much less an ancient shard on a hillside.
