— As nearly all the ancient aquaeducts now remaining are of Roman construction, it has been generally imagined that works of this description were entirely unknown to the Greeks. […] The first aquaeduct was begun by App. Claudius the censor, and was named after him, the Aqua Appia. Subsequently seven or eight aquaeducts were built, which brought an abundant supply of water to Rome.
