From Japanese 牛久 (“Ushiku”), from 牛久市 (Ushiku-shi, Ushiku City), named after the 牛久藩 (Ushiku-han, Ushiku Domain), taking its name from the 牛久陣屋 (Ushiku Jin'ya, Ushiku Castle), named after the 牛久沼 (Ushiku-numa, Ushiku Pond) where it is situated.
