  1. one of four main subgroups of the Upper German dialects; spoken in the region of Franconia in northern Bavaria as well as some adjacent parts of Germany
    — The North Upper German area (Nordoberdeutsch) is like a wedge pushing the Middle German area northwards. It includes the two High or Upper Franconian (Hochfränkisch, Oberfränkisch) dialects known as South Franconian and East Franconian (Südfränkisch; Ostfränkisch) as well as the dialect of North Bavarian (Nordbairisch).
