— One of the places where Little Bald Head loved so much to spend a summer afternoon in the company of his grandfather was the market place and amusement center near the lotus pond of Shih Cha Hai (十刹海), of the Sea of Ten Monasteries—a stretch of water which was apparently designed to be used as a reservoir for the "sea palaces" which have in recent years been thrown open to the public as parks.[...]The first visitors to the Shih Cha Hai were there primarily to admire the lotus blossoms which to the mind of the cultured Chinese represent a human type— that of the chuin tze (君子), Superior Man.
