Quelpaert

— A Dutch Vessel, in the year 1653, being bound from Batavia to Japan, after suffering a most violent Storm of several days continuance, springing a Leak so wide that there was no means to drain the Water that rush’d into the Hold, several that happen’d to be then under Deck were drowned before they could get up, and each Man betaking himself to his shifts, 36 (of 64 that they were in all) got ashore upon the Island of Quelpaert, and those too severely bruised and hurt in saving themselves from the terrible Fate of their more unfortunate Companions.
