Named after the nawabs of Bengal; thus ultimately a bilingual compound of Arabic نواب (“representative, deputy”) + Persian گنج (“treasury, store”).
The alternative name "Chapainawabganj" (Bengali: চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জ) comes from prefixing the discussed term with চাঁপাই (cãpai).
