Mendip Hills

from Middle English Mendepe, possibly via Anglo-Norman *Mendepe. The exact origin is uncertain; possibly a hybrid of Proto-Brythonic *mönɨð, (“mountain”) and Old English yppe, (“upland hill” or “hunting upland”), possibly reconstructed as Old English *myned-yppe. Alternatively, a medieval folk form includes Middle English Myne-deepes (“mine-deeps”). + hills.
