英文释义
专有名词
-
An area of Sham Shui Po district, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
— Bob and Margaret had arrived on the mission field one year before us, in 1964. Like all new missionaries, they spent their first term learning Cantonese and helping in existing churches. Then, in 1971, they learned that Mobil Oil Corporation was building a large private housing development called Mei Foo, or "Beautiful and Prosperous New Village," on the waterfront west of Kowloon. The new city would be mammoth, with a planned population of 80,000. I had found a way to start relationships in Kwun Tong by entering David College as an English teacher; Bob and Margaret took the idea of education a step further and opened their own kindergarten on the second floor of one of the buildings in Mei Foo.
词源
From Cantonese 美孚 (mei⁵ fu¹). The area was previously a petroleum storage facility owned by English Mobil, who used this name for their business in the region and thus originated the placename.
