From Scottish Gaelic Cair Cheann Tulaich, in turn probably derived from a Cumbric name with the elements equivalent to Welsh caer (“fort”) + pen (“head, summit”) + tal (“brow”) + the suffix -og. The initial element was replaced by Scots kirk (“church”).
