Far Eastern time] on March 2, the Chinese authorities staged an armed provocation in the area of the border post of Nizhnemikhailovka (Damansky Island) on the Ussuri River. An armed Chinese unit crossed the Soviet state frontier and proceeded toward Damansky Island.[…] Islands in the Ussuri River, which forms the border between Chinese Manchuria and the Soviet Union's Maritime Territory are disputed. Presumably Damansky Island, near Nizhnemikhailovka, 140 miles south of Khabarovsk, is one of the disputed islands.
