Probably from Old English eald (“old”) and clif (“cliff”), meaning "the high land long occupied". Possibly from the Old English personal name Alda, but this is unlikely. Coates (2000) rejects the proposed specifics and suggests a Proto-Brythonic/Cumbric equivalent of Welsh allt (“cliff”).
